Mom!!!   Don’t Do That:  A humor blog for moms in their thirties, forties, and beyond

BLOG #1

It wasn’t until I was in my mid forties that I realized I had entered the mom, don’t do that zone. “ Mom,” my daughter politely said  . . .

  • Don’t dance in public!

What! I put the robot on the map.

  • Don’t tell jokes around my friends or anywhere for that matter.

What!  I was the comedy queen of the 70s.

  • Don’t ask where your glasses are in public.

  • Don’t yell across the room . . . make sure you go to the bathroom.

O.K., that one might be a little embarrassing.

  • Don’t call me baby names in front of my friends.

Well, I still see the cute tot.

  • Don’t make funny faces . . . please

Your friends thought they were funny.

  The list goes on . . .

 Flashback Moment . . .

I was playing with my son on his electronic game one day and suddenly started drifting into a flashback moment.

Thoughts of . . .  “Remember when we played jacks . . . that was simple, silver or color jacks and a ball . . . ‘onesies,’ ‘twosies’ . . . all the way up to as many jacks as you can pick up in one swoop!  We were math geniuses in the making. “Remember when we played hotch scotch . . . using our artistic talent to draw the diagram on the side walk . . . with chalk, of course. “Remember when we played marbles . . . big ones, red ones, all colors and sizes. “Remember when we played bola bat . . . our aim was to hit the attached ball as long as possible using a flat bat. “Remember when we jumped roped and created songs to match the rhythm of our movement.” “Remember when we waited with excitement for a windy day so that our kites could soar.” "Mom, mom!  Are you paying attention to the game?"  "Oh, I’m sorry son."

Childhood Kitchen Story

My dad . . . World’s Greatest Chef

As I was finishing a microwave dinner one day, I suddenly began to miraculously taste a meal from my past.

Southern potato salad and meatloaf pot pie.

Homemade tea, embracing a tangy lemon taste.

Fresh collard greens cut just right . . .creating a simmering aroma I smelled even while on a neighborhood hike.

Golden cornbread that called my name . . .

Sweet potato pie called me the same.

It’s time to eat so I start to run . . .sweat drops falling from the scorching sun. My brother was on a bike ride long gone,so I used my “Outside Voice” to say brothercome on. No sooner than I could step on the porch, flash brother was in the kitchen asking for more!

Re-run achieves

I must admit, I’m a nostalgia television re-run buff.   Yes, at times I join my daughter as she laughs at one of the more recent girly pre-teen shows, but my list of favorites still reigns! Mary Tyler Moore (my all time favorite sitcom), Soul Train (recognize), What’s Happening, Andy Griffith (still catch re-runs), My Three Sons, Petticoat Junction, Green Acres, Hawaii-Five-O, Get Christie Love!, Medical Center, Get Smart, Mission Impossible, and The Jeffersons (still catch re-runs).

Humor . . . have you had your dose today?
